The Five Towns Welcomes Gedolei Eretz Yisroel with Overwhelming Support
Keren Olam HaTorah’s U.S. mission continued on Monday, June 15, with a series of gatherings across the Five Towns, carrying its message of achrayus for the lomdei Torah of Eretz Yisroel from one home to the next.
The day began with a Seudas Rosh Chodesh at the home of R’ Yisroel Meir Wolmark. Rav Don Segal spoke passionately about Torah’s indispensable place within Klal Yisroel, stressing that the campaign is not about providing comforts or luxuries, but about sustaining Torah itself.
Rav Dov Landau urged participants to maximize their support, emphasizing that Am Yisroel is one body and that the crisis facing Eretz Yisroel’s yeshivos and kollelim concerns every Jew. He then inscribed a letter in a Sefer Torah nearing completion. A moving Hataras Klalos ceremony followed, along with tefillos and brachos for the tomchei Torah.
After a private gathering at the home of Mr. Moshe Wolfson, the delegation proceeded to the home of R’ Ari Schwartz. Rav Asher Weiss recalled how his father once wished to devote himself entirely to learning, only to be told by the Klausenburger Rebbe that sometimes the greatest mesirus nefesh is closing the Gemara to help another Jew. The gedolim’s decision to leave their learning and travel on behalf of Torah, he said, represents that same sacrifice.
Rav Shimon Galei shared the story of a boy from a home with little Torah background who asked for a bracha that his parents would permit him to continue learning. Though he possessed every material comfort, the boy said, what he truly yearned for was ruchniyus.
Rav Yosef Chevroni reflected on the sight of elderly gedolim traveling tirelessly for Torah. He recalled similar missions undertaken nearly a century ago by leading gedolim, including the Dvar Avraham, Rav Avraham Yitzchak HaKohen Kook, and his great-grandfather, Rav Moshe Mordechai Epstein. When that effort appeared likely to end, the Chofetz Chaim reminded American Jewry of the extraordinary zechus of sustaining “the neshama of Klal Yisroel.”
At subsequent gatherings hosted by Mr. Pinky Friedman and R’ Akiva Glatzer, Rav Yaakov Hillel emphasized that the campaign seeks only the basic necessities required for lomdei Torah to learn with dignity and peace of mind. Rav Yitzchak Ezrachi invoked the Aron HaKodesh, which carried those who carried it, teaching that Torah ultimately uplifts and sustains its supporters.
Rav Chevroni closed by declaring that every generation is given rare opportunities that can define a lifetime. This, he said, is such a moment: a chance to stand with Torah and earn the eternal bracha reserved for those who uphold it.
