The gedolim leading Keren Olam HaTorah’s mission to America spent Monday, June 8, and Thursday, June 11, in Lakewood, carrying their urgent appeal to the ir hatorah’s tomchei Torah through a series of gatherings at numerous local homes.

At Monday’s first gathering, R’ Baruch Jeremias spoke about the privilege of serving as a shliach of the gedolim and, ultimately, of Hashem. Rav Don Segal invoked the Chofetz Chaim’s desire to demonstrate that Hashem is not “bankrupt” and that Klal Yisroel remains firmly committed to His Torah. Rav Chaim Mordechai Ausband noted that although thousands of yungeleit are learning today, many are struggling financially, making this a critical time to stand behind them.

At the home of R’ Mattis Welik, the host described the extraordinary ameilus b’Torah found in Eretz Yisroel amid severe dachkus. Rav Yosef Chevroni recalled Rav Chanina ben Teradyon, who was burned while wrapped in a Sefer Torah. Although the parchment was consumed, the letters flew upward. External enemies can destroy Torah’s physical vessels, he explained, but its essence remains beyond their reach. Today’s danger threatens the “living letters,” the bnei Torah themselves, making their support especially urgent.

At another gathering, Rav Dov Landau stressed that the struggle facing Torah in Eretz Yisroel belongs to Yidden everywhere. The kol Torah there sustains Klal Yisroel worldwide, and strengthening it brings protection and bracha into one’s own home l’dorei doros. Rav Avraham Salim recalled Rav Dov’s cry during his first mission, “Ratevet! Ratevet! Hatzilu!” while Rav Yaakov Hillel explained that Hashem may now be giving Klal Yisroel the opportunity to support Torah directly and willingly.

The mission resumed Thursday morning with a breakfast reception at the home of Yanky Stern. Rav Salim spoke about the bitachon displayed by the gedolim when government cuts created an enormous financial crisis. Rav Don Segal explained that Torah is the true strength of Klal Yisroel and that its supporters become partners in preserving that strength. Rav Dov concluded with heartfelt brachos for all those participating in the effort.

At the home of R’ Yitzchok Rokowsky, Rav Hillel again emphasized the purity of Torah being sustained directly by those who cherish it. At Yaakov Taub’s offices, R’ Baruch Jeremias described Rav Dov’s extraordinary sacrifice in undertaking the mission despite his age and physical weakness. Rav Ausband warned that among today’s struggling bnei Torah may be the next Rav Aharon Kotler, whose future impact cannot yet be imagined. Those who enable such young men to remain in learning may be preserving generations of Torah.

The private visits culminated Thursday evening as hundreds of Lakewood baalei batim gathered at Tower 5. Shimon Glick praised Lakewood’s remarkable culture of generosity, while Reuven Wolf outlined the devastating practical effects of the government cuts.

R’ Chesky Klein closed with a powerful statement. Previous generations watched gedolim such as Rav Boruch Ber Leibowitz and Rav Aharon Kotler travel from town to town seeking support for their yeshivos. Today’s gedolim had now come personally to Lakewood with the same plea. How this generation responds, he said, will determine how history remembers this moment.
